Religious site — Kassandras Street, city centre
Construction began in 1895 and finished in 1906, while the city was still the Ottoman port town of Dedeagach — the mosque predates the Greek name Alexandroupolis by nearly two decades. It stands on Kassandras Street, a short walk from the centre, and still serves the city's small Muslim community today.
It's one of three religious buildings from the same turn-of-the-century stretch — alongside the Metropolitan Church of St. Nicholas at Metropolis Square and the Catholic Parish of St. Joseph — that together sketch out just how religiously mixed this Ottoman-to-Greek border city once was.
