River landscape — Near Polyanthos, ~1.5 hours west of the city
The Kompsatos rises in the Rhodope Mountains and eventually feeds Lake Vistonida, cutting through 68km of oak forest and fertile river plain along the way. Near the village of Polyanthos, between Komotini and Xanthi, a single-arch stone bridge believed to have been built by craftsmen from Epirus in the 17th or 18th century still spans the river.
The surrounding landscape is classic inland Rhodope — high ridges, deep valleys, and oak forest protected under Natura 2000 for its birdlife and biodiversity. The bridge itself is a quiet, specific stop rather than a destination to build a day around.
