Traditional village — Metaxades, ~95km north of the city
Metaxades sits on a hillside near the Greek-Bulgarian border, built almost entirely from a distinctive pale, light-beige local stone that sets its narrow, winding streets and two-storey houses apart from anywhere else in the region. It's been officially recognised as a traditional settlement of unique architectural character.
The stone-carving craft behind the village's buildings peaked in the late 19th century but traces back to the 17th, and is now documented and preserved as intangible cultural heritage — look for the carved detail worked into doorways, window frames, and house fronts as you walk through.
A quiet, photogenic stop best combined with Didymoteicho or Soufli on a wider loop through inland Evros rather than visited alone.
