The Evros Delta starts about twenty minutes south of Alexandroupolis, but it feels like a different country — flat, wide, and quiet, with the sea and the Turkish border both visible from the same spot on a clear day.
Start at the visitor centre in Traianoupolis for a map and current water levels, then head to one of the observation towers near the village of Loutra. Early morning is best: the light is low, the wind is down, and the birds are most active.
Spring and autumn migration bring the biggest numbers — flamingos, pelicans, herons, and birds of prey moving through in the thousands — but the delta holds resident swans and waterfowl year-round.
If you only do one thing, book a small boat trip out of one of the delta villages. Motorised tours cover more ground; a rowed or paddled boat gets you closer to the reed banks without spooking the birdlife.
Bring water, sun protection, and more time than you think you need. The delta rewards slowness.
