Archaeological Site of Zone

Archaeological site — Mesimvria, ~20km west of the city

The archaeological site of Zone sits near the village of Mesimvria, 20km west of Alexandroupolis, and holds the remains of an ancient city founded by settlers on the natural passage connecting East and West — the sea road into inland Thrace.

City walls, temples to Demeter and Apollo, and residential quarters are all visible on site, and the excavation is considered one of the most organized and accessible in the region, with a visitor path and information points built specifically for non-specialist visitors.

The site occasionally hosts an open-air concert under the August full moon — worth checking local listings for if your visit lines up with one.
