Historic building — City centre
Known locally as the Palio Dioikitirio, the Old Prefecture building was the administrative centre of the city and wider region under Ottoman and later Bulgarian rule, before continuing in the same role once the city became Greek — it housed the Evros Prefecture's offices from 1920 until 1995.
It's one of the more direct physical threads connecting Alexandroupolis's Ottoman-era administrative past to its 20th-century Greek one, still standing and in use rather than preserved as a museum piece.
A stop for the building and its history rather than an interior visit — easy to fold into a walk through the centre alongside Metropolis Square and the Ethnological Museum.
