National park — ~1 hour north of the city
Dadia is a fully protected 7,290-hectare forest and one of the most important raptor sites in Europe — the only forest on the continent where all four European vulture species can be seen. Around 35,000 visitors come each year, most for the birds.
Start at the Ecotourism Centre near the village of Dadia, about 500 metres from the settlement, which runs a lodge, café, and information centre organising ecotours. A closed observatory 2km further into the protected area lets you watch vultures and other raptors at a feeding site the guards restock roughly weekly — ask when the last feeding was to time your visit for the best activity.
It's a longer day trip than most of what's near the city — budget the better part of a day, including the drive — but it's a genuinely different experience from the coast and the delta, and a highlight for anyone into birds.
