Wetland — West toward Xanthi, ~1.5 hours by car
A shallow brackish lagoon-lake between the Rhodope and Xanthi regions, Vistonida is protected under Natura 2000 and the Ramsar Convention, and hosts more than 300 recorded bird species — Dalmatian pelicans, pink flamingos, swans, cormorants, and the white-headed duck, which winters here after arriving from as far as Kazakhstan.
An Environmental Information Centre near the town of Porto Lagos, just outside the lake, helps visitors find the best birdwatching spots by season. Spring and autumn migration are the peak windows, though something is usually around year-round.
This is further out than Dadia or the Evros Delta — worth combining with a wider day trip toward Xanthi rather than a quick add-on.
