Nestos Gorge

River gorge — Between Xanthi and Kavala, ~2 hours west of the city

The Nestos River carves a genuinely lush gorge between Xanthi and Kavala — a rarity in this part of Greece, where the surrounding hill country runs dry. Towering cliffs, dense tree cover, and a wide meandering river make it feel like a different climate entirely from the coast around Alexandroupolis.

A marked trail of over 10km follows the river's east bank, part of the long-distance E6 path, past the villages of Kromniko and Livera. Canoe and kayak trips through the gorge are widely run locally and are the easier way to see it if a full-day hike isn't the plan.

This is a further stretch than most of what's near the city — realistically a trip combined with Vistonida Lake or a wider loop toward Xanthi, rather than a stop on its own.
