Evros Delta Wetlands

Nature reserve — South of the city, ~20 minutes by car

Lagoons, reed beds, and freshwater marshes cover thousands of hectares where the Evros River meets the sea, forming a resting point for hundreds of thousands of migratory birds each year — flamingos, pelicans, herons, and birds of prey among them.

Observation towers near the village of Loutra are the easiest way in; a guided boat tour gets you closer to the reed banks at water level. Spring and autumn migration bring the biggest numbers, but resident birdlife is here year-round.

Full practical detail — timing, access, boat trips — is in the journal: A Weekend Guide to the Evros Delta. Guided tours can be booked on Tours & Tickets.
